Too many casual staff, people who has done only a very short training course and know nothing about the elderly,3 months courses are not enough to learn to look after them.

I found that it is far from person centred care. They do not have the capacity to manage ageing in place. They are disorganised. Residents are not always respected as people able to make decisions. When alarms are pressed it takes a long time to respond. Communication is ineffective. No stimulation for residents who remain sleeping in front of TV all day. The list goes on….

My grandmother and aunt attended the same Aged Care facility 3 years apart. On both occasions there was poor communication between the staff and family members and even poorer care of the residents. As both my family members were suffering from dementia I found it disconcerting that they were not encouraged to participate in activities and to keep their minds stimulated and active. In both instances they had falls which led to broken hips and ultimately their deaths. My grandmother was 98 years old and had lived in her own home until 5 months before her death. My aunt was in her late 70's and pretty much gave up on life once she was placed in Aged Care. On more than one occasion I entered the facility and made my way into the secure care ward for dementia patients, only to find that there were NO staff anywhere within the ward. The maximum number of staff that were ever present was 2 and that was extremely inadequate when dealing with high dependency residents. Overall the whole experience has left me worried that I may be placed into Aged Care later on in life and suffer the same treatment.
