My father has dementia. He is 87. My mum is his carer – she is 84. The apst four years have been very difficult. They live in a very small country town, without very much support. The closest aged care facilities are over an hour away. My dad cannot drive, my mum can only drive within the confines of her town. My father has become increasingly difficult with complex needs. My mother is becoming less able to support him by herself. My father has been to several aged car facilities for respite. None of been outstanding, until we stumbled across Imlay House in Pambula. My father’s last respite stay was the longest it has ever been – one month. My mother had come to the point that she needed a longer break, rime to recharge her own batteries and have time away from the stresses of living with a partner who easily manages to frustrate and cause distress through no fault of his own – dementia is a disease that saps the life out of relationships. Imlay House provided my father with outstanding care. My mother and I visited for the first time and were treated with respect and care. They responded to my mother’s feelings of guilt and continued to provide her with support throughout my father’s month away. They cared for both my elderly parents. For my sister and I, living a good 7 to 8 hours drive away from the facility meant visiting was very difficult. My parents refused to leave their beloved town when they could and it is now necessary to make plans for long term care in the same geographical area but a long, long way from Melbourne and extended family. From the moment we visited the facility we were introduced to the staff, the staff new each resident by name, the manager’s tour enabled us to see how much she knew about everyone who was there. She knew each group so well and shared her knowledge and expertise as we ventured along corridors, dining rooms and kitchens and even the kindergarten which is on site. We were suitably impressed. Through my father’s stay they kept us informed of doctor’s visits and the plans my father had to “escape” each day. The care and humour was evident in every call no matter who we spoke to or what time we rang. We were always put at ease. My father loved the food. He could not understand why he was there. He came home happy and now has forgotten where he had staying the previous month. However, we have no hesitation upon recommending Imlay House and we plan when the time is right for my father to reside on a permanent basis at Imlay House in Pambula, New South Wales.
