I think it depends on why a person has been admitted in the first place. My mother had been an active and interested person, but her Alzheimers was making her do things like hitchhiking which would have once been the furthest thing on her mind. She was admitted for her own safety. Once she was in the aged care facility she stopped communicating, didn't socialise and seemed to abhor being there. Mum was there for 6 years. She was cared for well enough and there were some exceptional nurses, but if family weren't going there every day I don't think that she would have got enough to eat because it took so long and the staff haven't always got the time to spend with someone who can only manage about a cup of food in an hour at times. She had advanced dementia.
