If there had been an alternative we would never have put our parents into aged care. Our father was in a transitional care program at Shelton Manner was only there for a fortnight and passed away. complications due to a fall.in December 2014. My mum entered aged care after a fall at home and the onset of Dementia we placed her into care in Feb 2017 she passed away in July 2017 her condition also deteriorated after a fall in June 2017. After checking out 25 Aged Care Residences ,we placed mum into this Aged Care Residence because it was small with only 45 Residents and we were assured at the time that the Nurse to Patient Ratio was 1 to 5. Whilst the initial care seemed good it was only a matter of time that we noticed a drop in Personal Care Attendants to residents ratio. There seemed to be a constant change of Managers and staff members especially in the lifestyle coordinators role. Lifestyle and activities were minimal and non stimulating especially for those with dementia. Residents seemed to be prescribed a lot of medication for example Mum's medication was minimal when she entered into aged care this escalated alarmingly even when l questioned why she was on so much medication l was assured that it was safe and necessary . She was always having falls at least once or twice a week. I have no doubt the medication was the cause of this. Whilst the staff were caring and supportive there were not enough staff to adequately care for the residents. I would visit daily to ensure she was okay, l felt very sorry for those residents who did not have regular visits from family. I regret the day l ever put my parents into aged care the worst decision l have ever made. Aged Care needs a complete overhaul, there needs to be at least a 1 Personal Care Attendant to 4 residents ratio, especially for those who require high level care. . Musically motivated activity for Dementia Patients, has shown to calm and settle patients moods and also unlocks part of the brain unaffected by dementia, simple things like this could make such a difference to the care of our most vulnerable . Our Aged Care Residents deserve much better. It;s too late for our parents but please do something to ensure our Aged Care are looked after with Love Dignity and Respect, remember we will all be old some day..
