Facility: Strathdale Centre

Heart broken is the word that comes to mind when I think of Strathdale nursing home and the effect that it has had on my mum after a very short 2 week stay for respite. My mind was initially put at rest by the friendly staff and nice surrounds. I left mum smiling from Ear to ear and walked out with a skip in my step as I was going to enjoy a much needed break away, although I planned to visit mum on some of the days along with my sisters, taking turns to put mums and our own minds at rest. 3 days after admission the centre was in Lockdown due to the Novovirus. Ok, Bad timing! Just when we were there, yet I understood the protocol regarding no visitors and called on the telephone to talk to mum. Luckily Mum didn't contract the virus. With every call her voice was weaker and weaker. She complained to me about her backside hurting and that the pain was unbearable. I spoke to nurses and was told that they were changing mums positioning regularly. On the day I picked her up she was so frail, had obviously lost weight and could hardly talk. She had a bruised eyelid, cut on her leg and either 2 cuts on her lip or 2 coldsores. I have photos. When we got home and I changed her incontinence pad I saw horrendous chaffing and a fluid filled blister the size of a 20 cent piece on her buttocks cheek which they didn't inform me about. All she kept mumbling was "God help me" as the pain was so severe and she was also so obviously constipated that there was a hard bulge protruding. She asked for water and drank 3 glasses, which she never ever would normally, as most elderly do need prompting to get there water intake. I also noticed that when I received all the medications that were left over that they hadn't been giving her any Magnesium tablets that she heavily relies on for muscle weakness. My stomach is in knots. I am nursing her around the Clock. I dont know what could of gone wrong there. I know everyone is complaining of nursing homes being short staffed and maybe because of the lockdown, staff were cut further. I have looked after mum for 6 years without incident. She was there for 2 weeks! That is just not on, not right. Devastatingly unbelievable!

Facility: Willowood Centre

Very caring staff however we feel that they are slightly understaffed. It is a very good facility for a standard fee only facility.

Facility: Oberon Centre

The facility lacked trained staff. Year 1 registered nurse were in charge of the facility of a night time. On 3 occasion that I was present my parents were forgotten at meal times. Staff inappropriately administered oxygen to my mother who ended up with hypercapnia. She was also given endone that was charged on her medication chart but was not suppose to be. She was found narcotised twice. The facility was poorly run, under staffed.

Generally very good however maintenance could be vastly improved and the size of individual room TV's (12" screen) is ridiculous for visually impaired residents. Like all other facilities, it could benefit from additional staff numbers.
