I think it depends on why a person has been admitted in the first place. My mother had been an active and interested person, but her Alzheimers was making her do things like hitchhiking which would have once been the furthest thing on her mind. She was admitted for her own safety. Once she was in the aged care facility she stopped communicating, didn't socialise and seemed to abhor being there. I think she died from boredom and not being encouraged to do the things she'd always done eg gardening. The facility had insufficient staff to assist with interesting activities and the residents were plonked in front of the television and left there. It's too sad for words. I hope I die before that happens and I'm sure most of us feel the same.

Mum was there for 6 years. She was cared for well enough and there were some exceptional nurses, but if family weren't going there every day I don't think that she would have got enough to eat because it took so long and the staff haven't always got the time to spend with someone who can only manage about a cup of food in an hour at times. She had advanced dementia.
